August 4, 2013, SHERBROOKE, Que (ISN) – Teddy Kalp of North York and Alec Elliot of Kitchener led Ontario to four gold medals on Sunday afternoon to open the swimming events at the 2013 Canada Games.
Kalp, who is also preparing for the world junior championships at the end of the month in Dubai, clocked eight minutes and 11.77 seconds for the victory in the men’s 800-metre freestyle. He fended off a strong challenge from Jonathan Brown of Calgary, also Dubai-bound, in second at 8:12.51. Jon McKay of Victoria was third at 8:14.49.
Ontario’s second individual gold was in the Para-swimming 400-m freestyle. Elliot produced the best time based on his disability followed by Dalton Boon of Ladner, B.C., and Zach Zona of Waterford, Ont.
The 4X200-m freestyle relays were swept by Ontario teams. The men finished ahead of Alberta and B.C., while the women dominated their race with Alberta and Quebec second and third.
In the women’s 1,500-m freestyle, Breanne Siwicki of Winnipeg continued a strong 2013 season with gold in 17:03.68. Caitlin Hodge of Montreal was second in 17:13.90 and Sophia Saroukian of Edmonton third in 17:18.74.
