August 4, 2013, SASKATOON (ISN) – Faith Zacharias of London, Ont., completed a golden sweep and Rylan Wiens of Saskatoon smashed his Canadian record on Sunday to conclude the 2013 Speedo Junior Development Nationals diving competition at the Shaw Centre.
Zacharias placed first in the 12-13 age group girls three-metre with 346.05 points. Tanya Boychuk of Edmonton was second at 335.40 and Olivia Chamandy of Montreal third at 327.20. Zacharias also won the one-metre and platform on Saturday.
“It felt good to get the win, but I could have done some of my dives better,” said Zacharias. “Still I met my expectations for the meet.”
Melodie Leclerc of Montreal won the girls 11 and under three-metre denying a triple gold showing for Erin Field of Pointe-Claire, Que., who was second. Field won the one-metre and platform on Saturday.
In the boys 11 and under, Wiens capitalized on home pool advantage to complete a golden sweep with wins on one-metre and platform. He was also first on three-metre Saturday. On platform he scored 329.40 smashing his previous age group national mark of 264.90 set at last year’s junior nationals.
“I knew I had a good shot of breaking the record,” said Wiens. “I increased the difficulties of my dive this year I did those dives really well today. It was fun to compete in my home pool I felt it was easier to find my markers.”
In the boys 12-13 age group, Henry McKay of Ottawa took the one-metre event and Vincent Chartier of Montreal was first on platform.
The competition was also a selection meet for the Junior Pan Am Championships next month in Tucson, Arizona.
