August 7, 2013, Oshawa, Ont. (ISN) – Coming off their first year qualifying for the OUA playoffs, the UOIT Ridgebacks women’s hockey team continues to head in the right direction as they have added Teresa Horner to their list of recruits for 2013/14.
Horner is a shutdown defender out of Hamilton who played in the Provincial Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) for the Stoney Creek Sabres.
“We expect Teresa to be a solid addition to our defensive unit and she will no doubt emerge as a quiet leader on and off the ice,” said UOIT head coach Karen Nystrom. “She is a very disciplined and competitive individual who looks to achieve success in all the she does.”
Last season in the PWHL, the Sabres finished fourth overall in the regular season with a 25-6-4 record. The Sabres relied on solid defence and goaltending as they allowed only 61 goals against, second fewest in the league.
In the opening round of the playoffs against Burlington, Horner scored the only goal in the shootout of game three that propelled the Sabres to the next round. The Sabres continued their run at a berth in the final four, but lost in overtime to the Toronto Aeros in an elimination game.
In total, Horner played in 88 regular season and playoff games for the Sabres, collecting 24 points and was an assistant captain in her final season. She finished last season with a plus-42, the top plus-minus rating among defenders in Stoney Creek.
“I am looking forward to training camp,” said Horner. “I chose UOIT because I want to contribute to help further the team’s success. I believe UOIT’s hockey program and academics will be a good fit for me.”
Her junior teams have also had success at tournaments as she has won two Canada-USA tournament titles in Detroit, Michigan (2011 & 2012) and the2011 Brampton Tournament title. She also won two bronze medals at the OWHA provincial championship.
Horner will be familiar with some of the current Ridgebacks as she played the 2011/12 season with Sam Fochielli and Nicole LoPresti.
Playing high school hockey, she was the captain for the Saint Jean de Brebeuf varsity team. In 2011/12, her team won the Hamilton City Championship where Horner set up LoPresti for the game-winning goal.
I’m really excited to reunite with my former teammates Nicole and Sam. I know where to look for them on the ice. We had great chemistry as Sabres which I believe we will develop again as Ridgebacks.”
Horner is enrolling in the Nursing program at UOIT.
The Ridgebacks will open up training camp in September. UOIT’s home opener is slated for Friday, October 18 against the Waterloo Warriors. Game time at the Campus Ice Centre is 7:30 p.m.
