Heat athletes at Canada Summer Games

August 8, 2013, KELOWNA, BC (ISN) – The five UBC Okanagan Heat women’s volleyball players have enjoyed a successful run at the Canada Summer Games so far, they have been a part of the BC representative that will play in Thursday’s  gold medal game, to be aired live on TSN2 at 11 a.m. PST, Thursday, August 8th.

Making up nearly one-half of the BC roster, the Heat players: Brianna Beamish, Kaitlynn Given, Katy Klomps, Emily Oxland, and Katie Wuttunee, will be joined on the national sporting network with Heat and Team BC assistant coach, Becki Kosinski.

Team BC will square off against Alberta for the gold medal. Megan Festival, another member of the young Heat squad – a young team that has already earned a spot in the Canada West post-season – is an outside hitter for Alberta.

Undefeated in the games with a 6-0 record, Team BC has only dropped two sets so far in the tournament. Alberta has been almost as good, with a 6-1 record, falling only to BC in pool play.

The Heat men’s volleyball team sent three players and a coach to the Games, the three who suit up for the Heat and are competing for Team BC are: Jim Bell, Kristof Schlagintweit, and Alex Swiatlowski. Heat men’s volleyball assistant coach, Kyle Joslin, is an assistant with team BC as well.

Team BC lost in a semi-final to Alberta on Wednesday and will play for bronze on tomorrow at 8 a.m. PST. (Thursday, Aug, 8). Watch the action live and online at http://canadagames.tv/.

Two athletes and both of the coaches of the Heat Cross Country team are heading to Sherbrooke, Quebec for the Canada Summer Games to participate in the athletics competition.

Second-year athlete, Alea Stockton will be running the 2000 metre Steeplechase and 5000 metre events for Team Northwest Territories. Recruit Julianna Neudorf is set to run the individual 800 metre and the 4 x 400 metre relay. They will be coached by Nathan Reiter, coach for the men’s cross country program at UBC’s Okanagan campus.

Nikki Reiter, coach of women’s program, is headed to the Games as an apprentice coach as part of Canada Games Women in Coaching Apprenticeship Program.
