Alberta sweeps volleyball finals at Canada Games

August 9, 2013, SHERBROOKE, Que. (ISN) – Alberta swept Quebec in the men’s final and made a fantastic comeback in the women’s gold medal match in Thursday’s championship volleyball showdowns at the 2013 Canada Games.

In the women’s final, Alberta overcame 0-2 deficit to defeat B.C., 21-25, 13-25, 25-13, 25-20, 15-9 in a match that was carried live on TSN 2.

Caroline O’Dwyer led Alberta with 18 points including three service aces while Whitney Follette and Alexa Gray added 16 points apiece. For B.C., the top scorers were Krista Hogewoning with 18 and Kaitlynn Given with 13.

The bronze medal match also went five sets with Manitoba edging Ontario 20-25, 26-24, 17-25, 25-21, 17-15.

The men’s final was shorter as Alberta posted a decisive 25-22, 25-15, 26-24 victory over Quebec which couldn’t capitalize on a wild home crowd.

Scott Brunet led Alberta with 10 points while Quebec’s Nicholas Hoag led all scorers with 15.

B.C., defeated Ontario for the bronze 25-14, 25-13, 19-25, 25-23.
