Nine UBC Okanagan Heat volleyball players come home with Canada Games hardware

August 9, 2013, Kelowna, BC (ISN) – UBC Okanagan sent nine athletes and two coaches to this year’s Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, QB and saw every single one of them earn a trip to the podium bringing back a medal for their home province in the process.

Thursday (Aug 8) at 11 a.m. PST, in a nationally televised women’s volleyball match on TSN2, the undefeated BC Team, featuring five Heat athletes, fell in five sets to the contingent from Alberta after being up 2-0.

Calgary native and UBC Okanagan Heat outside hitter, Megan Festival and her Alberta teammates pulled off the stunning comeback winning the last three sets to win: 3-2 (21-25, 13-25, 25-13, 25-20, 15-9). BC had only lost two sets in the entire tournament before dropping their final three to earn silver, with Alberta receiving the gold. Kelowna native and Heat sophomore Kaitlynn Given was second on Team BC with 11 kills. Team BC’s roster is listed below.

On the men’s side three Heat men’s volleyball players played at 8 a.m. PST in the bronze medal match, the British Columbian’s dispatched their Ontario foes in four sets to earn Canada Games bronze, 3-1 (25-14, 25-13, 19-25, 25-23). Heat middle blocker, Jim Bell, led the BC squad with four total blocks.  Team BC’s roster is listed below.

Both the men’s and women’s Heat assistant coaches, Kyle Joslin and Becki Kosinski, were assistants for the BC men’s and women’s team respectively.

This was the first medal at the games for the BC women since 2001, and first silver since 1997, the BC males took home gold in 2001 to go with their 2013 bronze. For the Alberta women this was their first ever gold at the games.
