August 9, 2013, Alberta (ISN) – The Alberta Major Soccer League (AMSL), the only league administered by the Alberta Soccer Association will crown a Women’s Champion this weekend, and with certain results, may also crown a Men’s Champion.

With weather presenting issues for the league and a lot of movement within the standings all summer, it has certainly been an unpredictable season. On the women’s side however, Edmonton Victoria will hoist the Major League Trophy before their game versus the Red Deer Renegades on Saturday at 2 PM at Victoria Park. While Edmonton Northwest United, Calgary Callies and the Edmonton Angels have had very respectful seasons, Edmonton Victoria has put up an astounding 41+ goal difference this season and have only been defeated once in 13 games. With four players on the scoring leaderboard, Edmonton Victoria will repeat as league champions for the third time.

On the men’s side, Edmonton Scottish could clinch the league title with a win over the Calgary Callies on Sunday at Shouldice Encana Park in Calgary at 1:15 PM. While the team had a slow start to the season and a number of games postponed by rain, the team surged up the standings and put any doubt to rest with a convincing performance over the then second place Edmonton Drillers last Wednesday in a 3-0 win. The fight for second place on the men’s side at the moment is less assured as the Calgary Callies, Edmonton Drillers and Calgary Dinosaurs all share the second spot with only a few games left.

Second place in the league this season means a bye round during the Provincial Championships (Nationals Qualifying) so every game will be important as teams fight to secure the best seeding possible for Provincials.

Teams will continue to work hard in order to finish strongly during the Provincial Championships Tournament in Calgary over the September long weekend. League results determine seeding for the Championships and the winner on the men’s and women’s side will qualify for the National Club Championships in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
