August 10, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – Victoria Royals’ mascot Marty the Marmot has won the championship round of’s second annual Favorite Mascot of the Year poll.

Marty, who qualified for the championship round after he won the “Favorite Not Listed” category, earns the title of Favorite Mascot of the Year after receiving 37,352 votes from fans. In the final round of voting, Marty defeated Bailey from the National Hockey League’s (NHL) Los Angeles Kings, Benny the Bull from the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) Chicago Bulls, the Sausages of Major League Baseball’s (MLB) Milwaukee Brewers and others.

Marty’s victory can be attributed to the voting efforts of his loyal fan base, which he has developed in the Greater Victoria community largely through his philanthropic endeavors. He spends countless hours in the community each year raising money for a variety of charitable causes and organizations. During the 2012-13 Western Hockey League (WHL) season, Marty the Marmot raised over $17,000 and spent more than 400 hours at events in Greater Victoria. This summer alone, Marty has already spent over 160 hours in the community and raised more than $8,000. The Royals’ mascot has also been a long-time advocate for organizations such as the BC Cancer Foundation and the BC Lions Easter Seals.

This is the second year the Favorite Mascot of the Year poll has run. Categories included the NBA, MLB, NHL, National Football League (NFL), Minor League, College and Favorite Not Listed mascots.
