Nine Canadians in Wednesday’s finals at IPC Swimming World Championships

August 14, 2013, MONTREAL (ISN) – Brianna Nelson of Victoria and Justine Morrier of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., each posted personal best times to advance to finals in Wednesday’s preliminaries at the International Paralympic Committee Swimming World Championships.

In total, nine Canadians will race for medals on Wednesday evening.

Nelson clocked 34.64 seconds, her first sub 35 second time, in the S7 50-metre freestyle to rank fourth overall. She was closely followed by Sarah Mehain of Vernon, B.C., who posted the fifth fastest time in 35.95.

Morrier grabbed the eighth and last spot for the final in the S14 100-m backstroke finishing in 1:16.89 while Kirstie Kasko of Okotoks, Alta., just missed the cut for ninth.

Zack McAllister of Lethbridge, Alta., qualified fourth overall in the men’s S8 400 freestyle.

Other Canadian women in finals Wednesday night are Aurélie Rivard of St-Jean-sur Richelieu, Que., in the S10 100-m breaststroke, Valérie Grand’Maison of Montreal in the S13 100-m breaststroke and Camille Bérubé of Gatineau, Que., and Morgan Bird of Calgary in the S8 400-m freestyle.

The 17-year-old Rivard is vying for a third medal and Grand’Maison for a second trip to the podium. Canada has two silver and two bronze after two full days of competition.

Nicolas-Guy Turbide of Quebec City is in the men’s S13 100-m butterfly.

The event has attracted 480 swimmers from 55 countries and is the biggest gathering of para swimmers since London 2012. Competition continues through to Sunday at Parc Jean-Drapeau with preliminaries at 9 a.m. and finals at 5 p.m.

Sportsnet One will be airing a 30-minute highlights package featuring Canada’s top performances in the pool. The shows will air at 11 p.m. ET from Tuesday through Monday, with the exception of Saturday (11:30pm EST). TVA Sports will be presenting a daily show in French on its airwaves at 10 a.m. with an encore presentation at 2:30 p.m., from Tuesday through Monday.
