August 17,2013, SHERBROOKE, Que. (ISN) – Ontario captured its first gold medal at the Canada Summer Games triathlon venue on Saturday after a team of two men and two women combined to win the unique mixed relay in Sherbrooke, Quebec.

The Ontario contingent of Myles Zagar, Austen Forbes, Sasha Boulton and Samantha Klus joined forces to post a winning time of 1:23:15.60. The mixed relay consists of each of the four-team members completing a 250-metre swim, 6.6-kilometre bike, followed by a 1.6-kilometre run. Athletes tag off to their team member after finishing the run.

“It’s awesome to win the gold, especially coming back after yesterday’s silver. We really rallied together today and it was great to improve on yesterday’s performance,” said Zagar, who raced the second leg. “We had a team plan to execute and support each other and that paid off. The relay is a lot of fun. It adds another aspect to our sport, which is exciting.”

The Alberta team consisting of Russell Pennock, John Pexman, Emily Wagner, and Adeline Maunder won the silver medal and the province’s third medal in as many races this week after posting a time of 1:23:44.00. It was Wagner’s third triathlon medal, and fourth of the Games. She also won a bronze in a 4×100 swim relay last week. Team Saskatchewan’s Robert Bigsby, Aidan Katz, Gabrielle Edwards and Anne Charles combined to clock-in at 1:24:18.10 for the bronze medal and the green and white’s second triathlon podium of the week.

The powerhouse team from Quebec, who won gold in both the men’s and women’s relays yesterday were en route to completing the hat trick until Alexis Lepage suffered a flat tire in the second leg of his bike course. Quebec finished fourth at 1:24:40.70.
