August 17, 2013, TRNAVA, Slovakia (ISN) – Eight different players scored goals and goaltenders Kris Oldham (Anchorage, Alaska) and Nicholas Vilardo (Clarence, N.Y.) combined for 30 saves to help the U.S. Under-17 Select Team beat Germany, 9-2, at the Under-17 Five Nations Tournament today. The win clinched Team USA the Five Nations Tournament championship.

“Today was a great team effort against a very hard-working German team,” said head coach Pat Mikesch. “We played with explosive speed, and we continue to improve our transition game from defense to offense. Tomorrow should be a great game against a talented Slovakian team in their own country.”

Brock Boeser (Burnsville, Minn.), Troy Terry (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and Michael Floodstrand (Hinsdale, Ill.) scored first-period goals as the U.S. built an early 3-0 lead. Boeser knocked in a rebound just 1:29 into the game, Terry put a shot through German goaltender Patrick Berger’s five-hole two minutes later and Floodstrand extended the lead to 3-0 when he picked the top corner at 7:08.

Germany scored a pair of power-play tallies late in the opening frame to trim the lead to 3-2 at the first intermission, but Team USA responded with six second-period markers to take control of the game.

William D’Orsi (Sudbury, Mass.) scored twice in the first 10 minutes of the middle period before Thomas Novak (River Falls, Wis.), Michael Davies (Kirkwood, Mo.), Samuel Miletic (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and Brent Gates (Grand Rapids, Mich.) each recorded goals in a seven-minute span to give the U.S. a 9-2 cushion.

D’Orsi added two assists to finish the game with four points, and five other players had multi-point contests.

The U.S. Under-17 Select Team will conclude play in the 2013 Under-17 Five Nations Tournament tomorrow when it plays Slovakia at 9:30 a.m. ET.
