August 17, 2013, Nanaimo, BC (ISN) – The Nanaimo Buccaneers kicked off Day 2 of Training Camp with an early morning game at the Nanaimo Ice Center. The 2 teams squared off with Riley Medves taking the net for Team Black and Ryan Waldhaus in goal for Team White.
The teams would look tentative in the opening period, as only 14 shots would be fired and it would be scoreless after one.
In the first half of the 2nd period, the first goal would finally get on the board with David Osborne potting the first of the game from Chad Bell and Dayton Boutilier. The teams would then go to 3 on 3 for the remainder of the 2nd period, as Shane Dial would reply for Team White, before Noah Russi (from Lucas Franssen) and Daniel Foglietta from Will MacNamara made it 3-1 for Black after 2.
The coaches would have more fun going to 2 on 2 and 1 on 1 for the first 10 minutes of period 3. In 2 on 2 play, Nolan Richardson, Chad Bell, and Rowan Siider scored for Black, with Derian Hamilton and Patrick Bajkov scoring for White. Team White would also score 3 goals in 1 on 1 play to tie the game up at 6, as Jordan Topping, Bajkov, and Ryan Hogg would get the goals. The 2 teams would go to OT, and at the 4:17 mark Clayton Peace would pop the water bottle behind Steven Ridley to give Black the 7-6 win.
Game 2 of the day would be played 5 on 5 for the entire game with the exception of 2 penalties, and with Head Coach Brad Knight taking over Team White’s bench, it seemed to spark the guys as Topping would open the scoring from Derian Hamilton at 5:01, and Bajkov would get his 1st of 2 in the 2nd game, with Jake Calverley and Nick Marshall drawing assists at 18:39.
In the 2nd period, both Marshall and Thor Rosback would take penalties, however Team White would not capitalize. There would be 2 goals scored in the period as Richardson would score at 16:46 from Peace and Ryan Hunt, and Bajkov would get his 4th on the day, from Kyle MacDonald and Riel Gibson. At 3:28, Conner Mowatt would bang home a loose puck after an end to end rush by Boutilier. Team White would get an insurance goal from Nick White on a 2 on 1 with Gibson. Team Black would pull their goaltender but could not get any closer, as Team White skated away with the 4-2 victory.
After the game, the coaching staff decided to not release any players and give them one final chance to impress on Sunday morning. Game starts at 8 am, with a final practice for remaining players at 11 am. The team has 3 exhibition games scheduled before opening up the league schedule. They will travel to Victoria on August 27th, host the Campbell River Storm on August 30th, and visit Oceanside on the 31st.
