August 20, 2013, Chicago (ISN) – The WNBA announced Monday that Chicago Sky center Sylvia Fowles has been named WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week for August 12 through August 18. This is the second Eastern Conference Player of the Week honor for Fowles who was named the winner for the week of July 8-14.
Fowles averaged 19.3 points, 13.3 rebounds and 1.7 blocks in the Sky’s three games during the week of August 12. She led the Sky in points against the Los Angeles Sparks on August 13. Her 22 points was her sixth 20-plus point game of the season. She followed this with a double-double performance, scoring 16 points and taking down 10 rebounds, to lead the Sky in their win against the Seattle Storm on August 15. This was her 11th double-double of the season.
She continued to be a force as she closed out the week. Her efforts on August 18 helped the Sky to their largest comeback victory in franchise history (25 points) against the Connecticut Sun. Scoring 20 points and taking down 21 rebounds, Fowles accomplished her second 20-20 game of her career and the second in Sky history. With this mark she becomes the only player in WNBA history to have two 20-20 games in a single season.
Fowles was unstoppable from the start against Connecticut. Bringing down 14 rebounds in just the first half, she set a new Sky individual record for rebounds in a half. Fowles finished the night with her 20th career game with 15 or more rebounds, good for fourth in WNBA history, and the fourth 20-plus rebound game of her career.
This season Fowles is averaging 16.7 points, 11.7 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game. She has led the league in rebounds since May and is ranked second overall in blocks per game.
Other candidates for WNBA Player of the Week were Atlanta’s Angel McCoughtry in the East as well as Minnesota’s Seimone Augustus and Maya Moore, Seattle’s Shekinna Stricklen and Tulsa’s Elizabeth Cambage in the West.
Los Angeles’ Kristi Toliver was named Western Conference Player of the Week.
