August 22, 2013, IZMIR, Turkey (ISN) – Canada faces Tunisia in its opening match Thursday at the FIVB men’s volleyball U21 World Championships which takes place in Ankara and Izmir, Turkey and runs until September 1.
The Canadians arrived on August 16 in Izmir, to prepare for their biggest event of the year where they were drawn in Pool C along with Serbia, USA, Tunisia and Rwanda.
In the round robin Canada faces Tunisia on Thursday, Rwanda on Saturday, Serbia on Sunday and the U.S., on Monday August 26. The top-four in each of the four pools advance to the playoffs while fifth place teams battle for positions 17-20.
Canada’s head coach David Preston said he’s been impressed with his squad’s work ethic this summer and feels well prepared for the competition.
“We have been training since June,” said Preston. ”Some of my players are getting their first big international experiences and it’s an opportunity to see them play under these conditions.”
At the last U21 worlds in 2011, Canada finished 11th. The team qualified for this year’s edition placing second at the 2012 NORCECA Junior Continental Championship in Colorado Springs.
Returning athlete from last year’s under-21 team are: Alex Russell of Surrrey, B.C., Danny Demyanenko of Toronto, Stephen Maar of Aurora, Ont., Jarrid Ireland of Winnipeg, Milan Nikic of Calgary and Riley Barnes of St. Paul, Man.
Newcomers are Gabriel Chancy of Montreal, John Goranson of Red Deer, Alta., Brad Gunter of Courtenay, B.C., Jeremy Davies of Calgary, Bruno Lortie of Ottawa and Jayson McCarthy of Oshawa, Ont
Canada’s best ever result at these championships was fifth place in 1999.
