August 22, 2013, MONTREAL (ISN) – De’Von Barnett of Waldorf, Md., scored 23 points, including 13 in the final quarter as Sacred Heart University rallied from a 14-point halftime deficit to defeat McGill 83-77 in men’s basketball at a steamy, Love Competition Hall, Tuesday.

It spoiled McGill’s 113th season opener and was the third victory in as many games for the Pioneers, an NCAA Div. 1 team from Fairfield, Conn., in the middle of a five-game tour of Canada.

Five members of the Redmen reached double figures in scoring, including Vincent Dufort of Smiths Falls, Ont., and Brazilian-born Rodrigo Imperador, who shared the team lead with 14 points apiece.

The Pioneers led 24-21 but McGill outscored them 20-9 in the second stanza to take a 41-33 advantage into the intermission. The Redmen led 60-54 after three quarters but wilted in the final frame when Sacred Heart outscored their hosts 29-17.

Barnett went 10-for-17 from the field and made three of five freebies.

McGill, which committed 28 turnovers to only 17 by SHU, had a 29-24 edge in rebounding. They shot 48.1 per cent from the floor, 41.7 from three-point range and 77.3 from the foul-line. The Pioneers shot 43.5, 44.4 and 75.0, respectively.

McGill, 0-1 in preseason action, will now focus on the Syracuse Orange, a perennial NCAA contender, who will play the Redmen in front of an expected capacity crowd at Love Competition Hall on Wednesday at 6 p.m. General admission is $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and students, while children 12 and under will be admitted free. Advance tickets are available at the Redbird Sports Shop (514-398-1539), inside the Currie gym. Tickets can also be purchased at the door and go on sale 90 minutes before tip-off.
