August 23, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – University of Victoria Vikes alumna Danielle Hennig, Kaitlyn Williams and Thea Culley were recently named to Canada’s women’s field hockey team set to compete at the 2013 Pan American Cup in Mendoza, Argentina.
All three players played integral roles during their time with the Vikes and will look to contribute to a squad that has eyes on a gold medal at the continental championship and ultimately a sole ticket to the World Cup.
Hennig, who competed with the Vikes in 2007-11, compiled an impressive Vikes career that included scoring a goal in the Vikes 2008 CIS Championship victory over Alberta. The Kelowna native also received Canada West All-Star honours following the 2010-11 season. In short of completing her final two seasons, Hennig relocated to Vancouver to train full time with the national team. Hennig has since competed with Canada in the World League and the Pan American Games in 2011.
Culley, who had stints with the Vikes in 2003-05 and 2006-07 was a member of the Vikes during their 2003, 2005 and 2006 silver-medal winning teams. Following her Vikes career, she represented Canada in the 2008 Olympic qualifier, hosted in Victoria, as well as the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi and the 2011 Pan American Games.
Williams, a five year Vike from 2007-12, entered her freshman season along with Hennig. In 2007, the White Rock native was named the CIS Rookie of the Year and back-stopped the Vikes to their most recent national title in 2008. In 2011-12, she was named Canada West Goalkeeper of the Year and was the only Vike on her squad that season to earn CIS All-Canadian team honours.
The three Vikes are among nine other Canada West players named to the team, including six UBC Thunderbirds.
Canada will open their World Cup qualifying tournament against Guyana, on Sept. 21, and will also face pool-play matches against the top-seeded Argentina, as well as Trinidad and Tobago. The seven day tournament runs from Sept. 21-28, with the winner earning a berth to the 2014 women’s World Cup, hosted in the Hague, Netherlands.
