MONTREAL — The McGill University men’s golf team begins its 2013-14 season at the UQAC invitational tournament at the Chicoutimi Golf Club, August 26-27. This is the first of four events in the RSEQ university golf circuit.
The Redmen have entered a full five-man team, all of whom are returnees from last year’s squad which qualified for the 2013 Canadian collegiate championships last May. The team roster includes Ryan Boyd of Montreal, Ben Miquel of Houston, Tx, Brian Neill and Michael Reaume, both natives of Ottawa and Tom Calvet, who hails from Nice (France).
“Because classes have not yet started at McGill, we only had a few days to prepare for such an early season tournament,” says head coach Bob Dubeau. “I am confident however that our team members have been active this past summer and expect them to report to campus with their games in good form.”
Competition will again be strong with all 12 Quebec universities fielding men’s teams for this event. Dubeau feels that Laval and Montreal remain the top two teams to beat but indicates that McGill can challenge for a third- or fourth-place finish in the conference. Other teams expected to challenge McGill will be Sherbrooke, UQTR, Concordia and UQAM.
McGill will participate in another three events this fall; the ETS Match Play event at Lachute (Sept 14-15), Concordia’s tournament at Le Blainvillier (Sept 23-24) and the RQSE Championships, hosted by Bishops, at the Milby Golf Club, Sept 29-Oct 1. The top four teams in the standings will qualify for the 2014 nationals in Winnipeg next May.
On the women’s side, the Martlets are scheduled to begin their competitive season on Sept 15th at the Queens Invitational in Kingston.
