August 26, 2013, Edmonton, AB (ISN) – Just two months after being inducted to the Volleyball Canada Hall of Fame it was announced late last week that Canada West Universities Athletic Association volleyball convenor Sandy Silver will be honoured with the In Her Footsteps award, recognizing British Columbia women in sport, on October 22nd.

Billed by ProMOTION Plus as an evening of inspiration, honour and recognition, Silver, who was a finalist for the same award in 2012, will be recognized as a standout coach and builder of volleyball for well over 40 years, from Seneca College and York University in Ontario to her involvement with Team Canada, B.C. Volleyball, at UBC and Canada West.

“I am honoured to join the ranks of the women who have been previously recognized by the ‘In Her Footsteps’ award, said Silver.

ProMOTION Plus is the British Columbia organization for girls and women in physical activity and sport, established as a non-profit society in 1990.

“In the 1980’s, when I was a Planning Committee member of the B.C. division of CAAWS which eventually became ProMotion Plus, it was my intention to help make the world of sport a better place for girls and women. My work before and since, has been dedicated toward that goal.”

Outspoken on gender equity, Silver was a major contributor in female sports reaching the level of funding, social advancement and acclaim that it has today, working to promote and develop women’s sport nationally and internationally.

The Canada West volleyball convenor since 1992, Silver is a member of the York University Hall of Fame in volleyball and badminton and at UBC in 2000 received the Kay Brearley Service Award as a person whose service to the women’s athletic program is judged to be exceptional. She has coached the UBC women’s volleyball to a CIAU national bronze medal (1983), was an assistant coach for the Canadian national women’s volleyball team (1980-82) and had continued involvement on numerous boards and committees at a number of levels.

Tickets for the event may be purchased for $30 from ProMOTION plus:
