August 26, 2013, Saskatoon, SK (ISN) – The University of Saskatchewan Huskie women’s soccer team opened their preseason schedule by tying for the Great Plains Challenge title in Regina.
Saskatchewan finished the four-day event tied with the University of Alberta Pandas atop the standings with 3-0-1 records.
The eight-team preseason tournament featured Alberta, Mount Royal, Manitoba, Winnipeg, Minot State and host the Regina Cougars, who split their team into two squads.
The Huskies began the tournament against the Regina Cougars Green squad with a 2-0 victory. In their second match of the tournament Saskatchewan faced the Manitoba Bisons, settling for a 0-0 draw
After failing to score in their previous match, Saskatchewan would explode offensively in their third match of the tournament defeating the Winnipeg Wesmen 6-1. Once again the Huskies offence was strong in the final match of the tournament defeating the Minot State Beavers 5-0.
“It was a very solid performance to open the season,” said Huskie head coach Tom LaPointe, who enters his seventh year at the helm of the squad. “Even in the heat, we had a very solid defensive performance. “
The Huskies will face the Trinity Western University Spartans and the Langara College Falcons Monday and Tuesday in non-conference action in B.C. Saskatchewan opens their Canada West schedule September 6, in Manitoba against the Bisons
