August 27 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – Two-time Olympian Bruce Deacon and two-time Canadian marathon champion Jim Finlayson will race head-to-head this weekend over 10 kilometres. Saturday, August 31st at the University of Victoria’s Centennial Stadium they will compete for the right to be crowned BC 10000m Champion.
Bruce Deacon competed in the Olympic Games twice and is also a four-time IAAF World Track and Field Championships competitor in the marathon distance event. At the California International Marathon, he was the first to become a two-time winner and has won the race a total of three times. He has run under the 2:20:00 mark at least six times, with two more right on the 2:20 threshold. His personal best is 2:13, run twice. Deacon, earlier this year during The Q’s Victoria Run Series 5k road race dubbed, Spinnakers 5k won with the finish time of 15:52. “I’m feeling very fit right now,” said Deacon. “So I would like to take advantage of it and I think the 10k this weekend at the track is a great opportunity.”
Meanwhile former University of Michigan athletes, Jim Finlayson continues to run well as a master. He finished second overall at the Comox Valley Half Marathon to Geoff Martinson. He is not only is two-time Canadian Marathon Champion, he has also twice competed in the IAAF World Cross Country Championships and won the GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon. His marathon personal best is 2:18, while his 10k personal best is 29:45.
The race will be very competitive in the masters division with long-time Victoria-based athlete and former University of Victoria Vike Craig Odermatt also toeing the line. Other athletes planning to race are former Vikes Nick Walker and Kris Swanson. Ian Hallam will make the masters race interesting – Hallam is a competitive member of the Prairie Inn Harriers running club.
Marilyn Arsenault of Victoria will be competing in the Toronto Scotiabank Waterfront Marathon in October; meanwhile she plans to race the 10k this Saturday, as she builds her fitness. Arsenault is also a former Vike as well as former GoodLife Fitness Victoria Half Marathon record holder.
The Q’s Victoria Run Series’ final track meet of the 2013 season also offers a 5000m race for all abilities, with the likelihood that two races at that distance will be offered, as demand is increasing – all races will be capped at 24 runners each. Racing starts at 6:30 PM sharp, cost is $20 in advance.
The Q’s Victoria Run Series is in its fourth year. Proceeds are directed to the Mustard Seed Food Bank. The two final events to cap off the 2013 season are the Synergy Shuffle 30k happening Sunday, September 15th and the annual Series Awards and Silent Auction on September 29th.
