August 28, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – The Univeristy of Victoria Vikes women’s field hockey team ended their pre-season trip in Boston with a perfect 3-0 record, picking up wins against Yale, Harvard and Dartmouth College.
Most recently, the Vikes defeated Harvard 4-1 with two goals coming from each of Kathleen Leahy and Rosie Beale, while second-year Amanda Kurianowicz netted four goals in the 6-3 victory over Dartmouth College.
Against Harvard, the Vikes went up early after Leahy was able to convert a flick after defender Andrea Jones sent a well-timed ball across the circle. The Vikes maintained the attacking momentum, hemming Harvard in theird defensive third of the pitch. Beale put the Vikes up by two on a penalty corner conversion, firing a ball past the Harvard keeper’s right kicker.
The Vikes had several penalty corners in the latter half of the game but were unable to capitalize. Leahy broke the lull, after she found the back of the net on a penalty corner, lifting the Vikes up 3-0. Harvard bounced back after goal number three, stringing some passes together to spread the Vikes defence line and break the shut out at 3-1. Beale converted a third short corner for the Vikes to give the Vikes the 4-1 final score.
Against Dartmouth College, it was the home side that got on the board in the opening minute of play. Dartmouth converted the early penalty corner that was answered almost instantaneously by Kuraniowicz. The forward stripped a Dartmouth defender at the top of the circle, allowing senior Kyla Kirby to pick up the loose ball and slot it back to Kurianowicz for her first of four goals in this game. Shortly after, the Vikes created their own opportunities, moving the ball from the back to front via Alexis Veljacic, Stefanie Hatch and Emily Fisher. Fisher had the final touch on the ball to give the Vikes the 2-1 go-ahead. Dartmouth responded with a 2-2 tying goal but the Vikes found some comfort, adding three more goals for a 5-3 edge entering the break.
Kurianowicz notched her fourth goal late in the second half to give the Vikes a commanding 6-3 victory over Dartmouth College and rounding up their three-game pre-season series with a 3-0 record. The Vikes will now return home for the preparation of their Canada West season and the 2013 CIS women’s field hockey national championship, set for Victoria Oct. 31 – Nov. 2.
