August 29, 2013, HOCE, Slovenia (ISN) – Canada capitalized on 30 unforced errors by Denmark while committing only 11 on Thursday in a 25-18, 25-16, 25-19 victory to open a four-country men’s international volleyball tournament.

It was the first tournament for the Canadian men’s team since its fifth place finish last month in the FIVB World League.

Canada is currently overseas for training and matches in preparation for the North and Central America and Caribbean (NORCECA) Continental Championships from September 23 to 28 in Langley, B.C.

Toon Van Lankvelt of River, Man., and Gavin Schmitt of Saskatoon led the Canadian attack with nine points each while Fred Winters of Victoria added eight.

”It was good to be back in official competition after the break,” said Canada’s head coach Glenn Hoag. ”Even without having scouted Denmark, our guys did a good job of staying patient and did not make very many errors. Our offensive systems worked well but we still have a few things to work on.”

Canada, currently ranked 11th in the world, face world number-nine Bulgaria on Friday evening. Slovenia upset the Bulgarians in four sets on Thursday.
