Royals Clipped By Silvertips

August 30, 2013, Everett, WA (ISN) – Friday evening saw the Victoria Royals begin their 2013 WHL Pre-Season schedule at Comcast Arena against the host Everett Silvertips. The contest was the first of three games Victoria will play this weekend as part of the Silvertips’ annual pre-season tournament.

Patrik Polivka was given the nod in net for the Royals while Everett turned to Austin Lotz.

Polivka quickly made an impact as he thwarted a Silvertips’ three-on-one with a big pad save early in the first period. Reid Petryk would put Everett in front, however, as he placed a wrist shot from the slot past the blocker of the Royals’ netminder at 13:05 while taking a hit from Logan Nelson. The home side carried the 1-0 lead into the first intermission despite a late push from Victoria.

The Royals were assessed a penalty following a scrum near their net and Linden Penner cashed in for Everett just nine seconds into the man advantage. Penner’s goal put the Royals down 2-0 with 12:21 left in the middle frame. Later in the period, Coleman Vollrath came in to split the game’s goaltending duties with Polivka and Victoria would kill off two more penalties to keep the deficit at two after 40 minutes of play.

Nelson struck on the powerplay for the Royals 6:01 into the third period to cut the lead to one. Tyler Soy fired a pass into the slot that hit a skate, but Nelson found the loose puck and beat Lotz blocker side. Victoria played with a physical edge all night that continued as the visitors pressed for the equalizer. Kolton Dixon and Ben Walker each dropped their gloves while the Royals delivered several hard hits to Silvertips’ skaters. Vollrath was pulled for the extra attacker with just over one minute left in regulation, but Everett held on for the pre-season win. Silvertips 2 Royals 1.

Victoria went 1/5=20.0% on the powerplay, while Everett also went 1/5=20.0%. The Silvertips outshot the Royals 25-18.

The Royals will continue their pre-season schedule tomorrow afternoon when they face the Seattle Thunderbirds tomorrow afternoon in Everett. Puck drop is set for 3:00 p.m. The Royals’ only home pre-season contest will come Saturday, September 14th when the club welcomes the Vancouver Giants to Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. An afternoon puck drop is slated for 1:35 p.m.
