August 30, 2013, Washington, Pa. (ISN) – Washington & Jefferson College junior midfielder Gina Taglieri (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach) scored two goals and assisted on another as the Presidents earned a 5-3 season-opening field hockey victory over Kenyon Friday night at Cameron Stadium.

The Presidents, who scored four times on their five penalty corners, fought back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to record the program’s seventh-straight win in a season opener. The last time W&J began the season with a loss was in 2006 (5-0 at Juniata).

Kenyon scored first five minutes in, but freshman forward Lauren Brown (Novi, Mich./Novi) tied the game 10 minutes later in her first college appearance. Classmate Amanda Steffey (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) assisted on the goal.

The Ladies led 2-1 at halftime, but the Presidents netted the first two goals of the second half to grab their first lead. Taglieri fed Steffey for the first goal four minutes in and Taglieri fired home a pass from sophomore midfielder Lauren Paul (Novi, Mich./Novi) just under eight minutes later.

The back-and-forth affair continued 2:19 later when Rachel Hall found the back of the net; however, Paul collected the eventual game winner of a pass from junior midfielder Catherine Beaudoin (Barkhamsted, Conn./North Western Regional) with 13 minutes left. Taglieri tacked on an insurance tally 15 seconds later and the Presidents’ defense held on for the opening win of 2013.

W&J scored on five of its eight shots, while the Ladies fired 10 shot attempts on sophomore Morgan Brozena (Telford, Pa./Souderton). Brozena finished with five saves.

Washington & Jefferson plays another NCAC opponent on Sunday night when it hosts the Oberlin Yeowomen at 6:00 pm.
