September 1, 2013, Everett, WA – Trent Lofthouse scored a pair of goals to lead the Victoria Royals to a 3-2 win over the Tri-City Americans in Western Hockey League pre-season action Sunday afternoon at Comcast Arena in Kent, Washington.
The contest was Victoria’s final game of the Everett Silvertips’ annual pre-season tournament. Patrik Polivka got the start in goal for the Royals while the Americans countered with Eric Comrie.
Tri-City jumped out to a quick start as Brian Williams beat Polivka with a shot under the glove just 17 seconds into the game. Victoria began to claw back and would eventually get an equalizing goal from rookie Matthew Campese as he recorded his first in a Royals’ jersey. The Prince Albert, SK native centered a pass from the right side that took a deflection off of a defender’s stick and found its way past Comrie at the 16:13 mark. The teams remained tied 1-1 after the first period of play.
Trent Lofthouse put the Royals in front with a powerplay goal at 12:44 of the middle frame. Lofthouse walked off the left wall and fired a wrist shot short side on the Tri-City netminder. The Americans answered with a powerplay goal of their own when Williams notched his second of the night. Williams’ marker came with 28 seconds remaining in the period and made it a 2-2 tie after 40 minutes.
Victoria pushed hard to begin the third period as they looked for their first win of the pre-season. At the 5:15 mark, Tyler Soy spotted Lofthouse as the forward streaked into the slot in search of his second goal of the game. Lofthouse one-timed Soy’s pass and hammered the puck over Comrie’s glove to give Victoria a one-goal lead. The Royals continued to press as they threw 17 shots on the Tri-City net in the third period to secure the win. Victoria 3 Tri-City 2.
Victoria went 1/6=16.7% on the powerplay, while Tri-City went 1/5=20.0%. The Royals outshot the Americans 34-23.
The Royals will return to Vancouver Island to prepare for the club’s only home pre-season contest on Saturday, September 14th. Victoria will welcome the Vancouver Giants to Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre on that day and an afternoon puck drop is slated for 1:35 p.m.
