September 1, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – Michael Fretz and Nicholas Bower each scored twice as the Victoria Cougars defeated the Westshore Wolves 6-2 in the final preseason game for both teams on Sunday.
Victoria finished the preseason at 2-0 while the Wolves went 1-1.
Also scoring for the Cougars, who led 1-0 after one period and 3-1 after two, were David Marshall and Mark Walton.
Nathan Hargrave received the start in net for Victoria and allowed one goal on seven shots through 40 minutes. Connor Beauchamp played the third period and made nine-of-ten saves.
The Cougars went 2-for-7 with the man advantage and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill.
Replying for Westshore was Brett Lervold and Braedon Behan.
Goaltender Matthew Chester, who stopped 32-of-35 shots through 31 minutes and 14 seconds, took the loss for the Wolves. Nick Dueck faced 18 shots and made 15 saves in relief.
The Cougar’s Fretz made a solid impact after being acquired earlier in the day in a trade with the Oceanside Generals for Kelyn Opel.
Opel, whose hometown is Parksville, B.C., had requested a trade to be closer to home.
“It is very hard to make a trade of this magnitude,” Cougars’ governor Gary Boyer said. “But this is an example of two clubs working together to accommodate player requests.”
Fretz, 19, accounted for 34 goals, 12 assists, and eight penalty minutes in 43 games for Oceanside last year.
“He [Fretz] is a pure goal scorer. He and soon to be teammate Mark Walton finished in third and fourth place respectively in goals,” Boyer said.
Meanwhile, Opel, 20, returns home after registering six goals, seven assists, and 27 penalty minutes in 14 games with Victoria last season.
Victoria opens the 2013-14 Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League season at home against the Comox Valley Glacier Kings on September 5. Game time at the Archie Browning Sports Centre, located at 1151 Esquimalt Road, is 7:00 p.m.
