September 1, 2013, Everett, WA (ISN) – The Portland Winterhawks suffered their first defeat in preseason play Sunday, dropping a 6-4 decision in Everett against the Silvertips.
The Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead 8:31 into the game on a goal by rookie defenseman Keoni Texeira, the lone goal of the opening frame.
Portland made it a 2-0 lead with a power play goal from Layne Viveiros at the 5:26 mark of the second, but Everett responded with goals from Josh Winquist and Patrick Bajkov to even the game at 2-2. The Hawks bounced back with goals just 1:27 apart from Adam Rossignol and Chase De Leo to regain the lead at 4-2, but Winquist scored his second of the game later in the frame and was followed by a goal from Waltteri Hopponen as the Silvertips made it a 4-4 tie going into the third.
Everett’s Logan Aasman struck early in the third with a power play goal to give Everett a 5-4 lead. The Hawks pressed throughout the third to get the equalizer, but late in the game with the net empty for an extra attacker, Winquist scored into the open net to seal a 6-4 win for the Silvertips.
Jarrod Schamerhorn was in goal for the Hawks and stopped 47 of the 52 shots he faced. Austin Lotz picked up the win for Everett with 19 saves on 23 shots.
The Hawks were 2-4 on the power play and 7-8 on the penalty kill.
The Hawks continue preseason play Friday when they take on the Silvertips at 11 a.m. in Kennewick, WA.
