September 3, 2013, EDMONTON – Week #1 of the Canada West Universities Athletic Association season provided countless highlights and high-scoring contests. For their outstanding performance Anthony Coombs (Manitoba), Adam Laurensse (Calgary) and Alex Morrison (UBC) have been selected Players of the Week.

OFFENCE: #1 Anthony Coombs, RB (Manitoba)

Manitoba Bisons running back Anthony Coombs started the season right where he left off after another CIS All-Canadian and Canada West All-Star performance last season, with 223 rushing yards on only 16 carries for a 13.9-yard average, with two rushing TDs. Coombs added another 37 yard receiving touchdown, while only playing in three quarters during the 65-41 home victory over the Alberta Golden Bears on Friday in the Bisons first-ever game at Investors Group Field.

The third year RB led the #10 Bisons as he rattled of eight runs of 10+ yards and pushed a close contest at the end of the second quarter into a comfortable victory by Manitoba. The Winnipeg native electrified an announced attendance of 10,199 with TD runs of 84 and 62 yards.

Coombs’ 223 rushing yards was eighth-highest in single-game team history, while his 84 yard TD run was the fifth longest run by a Bison.

Next up for #10 Manitoba is another home game at Investors Group Field when they host the #9 Saskatchewan Huskies (1-0) on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 5:00 p.m. CT in the SHAW TV Game of the Week.

DEFENCE: #3 Adam Laurensse, CB (Calgary)

In his first CIS football game, cornerback Adam Laurensse made a huge difference for the University of Calgary Dinos’ defence.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound defensive back from Sherwood Park, Alta. was in on four tackles Saturday afternoon in Vancouver, but it was his two interceptions that snuffed out UBC drives that stood out as the Dinos improved to 1-0 with a 41-31 win over the Thunderbirds.

The first interception took place in the early stages of the second quarter, while his second pick came late in the third at a critical stage in the game. With the Dinos trailing 14-10, Laurensse hauled in an errant Carson Williams pass at the UBC 37 yard line and returned it to the 22. On the very next play, Brett Blaszko caught a 22-yard pass from Eric Dzwilewski to put the Dinos up 17-14, and Calgary never trailed again en route to the victory.

Laurensse and the Dinos head east to face the Regina Rams Friday night in Week 2 action, live on canadawest.TV.

SPECIAL TEAMS: #85 Alex Morrison, KR (UBC)

Playing in his first ever CIS football game, Alex Morrison returned the opening kickoff of the second half against Calgary 102 yards for a touchdown.

Morrison, who red-shirted last year, hails from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Standing 6’4 and weighting 220lbs, expectations are high for Morrison, who ran a team best 4.46 40 yard dash prior to the start of training camp.

Morrison finished the game with three kickoff returns for 123 yards and touchdown as the UBC Thunderbirds lost a tough game to #3 Calgary Dinos 41-31.

UBC will be on the road next week when they take on the University of Alberta Saturday September 7 in Edmonton.
