September 4, 2013, Edmonton, AB – Seven current members of the Edmonton Oil Kings will be away from the team beginning this week as NHL training camps kick off.
Oil Kings captain Griffin Reinhart will be in camp with the New York Islanders. Reinhart, New York’s first round pick (4th overall) in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, will report for the Islanders rookie camp from September 6-10 before the team’s main camp fires up Wednesday, September 11th. The 19-year-old defenceman had eight goals and 29 points in 59 games for Edmonton last season while posting a plus-30 on the backend.
Fellow 2012 first rounder Henrik Samuelsson will attend camp with the Phoenix Coyotes. Samuelsson, 19, was selected 27th overall by the Coyotes. The 6-foot-3 forward had 80 points in 69 games last season for the Oil Kings. Coyotes rookie camp begins Saturday, September 7th, while main camp kicks off September 11th.
A third first-round NHL pick, Curtis Lazar, will join the Ottawa Senators for training camp after the team selected him 17th overall in the 2013 NHL Draft. The 18-year-old centre led the Oil Kings with 38 goals last season. Lazar begins rookie camp with the Senators today before taking part in a rookie tournament with three other teams in London, Ont.
Lazar will be joined in London by fellow 2013 draft pick Tristan Jarry, who was selected 44th overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins this summer. The 18-year-old netminder posted a 1.61 goals-against average and .936 save percentage in 27 games last season for Edmonton, while putting up a record of 18-7-0-0 and six shutouts.
Forward Mitch Moroz, 19, is one of multiple Oil Kings or Oil Kings alumni who will attend camp with the Edmonton Oilers. Moroz, drafted 32nd overall by the Oilers in the 2012 NHL Draft, had 34 points in 69 games for the Oil Kings last season, also posting 140 penalty minutes. The gritty power forward will join the Oilers in Penticton, B.C. as the team prepares for both the Young Stars Classic and the annual Rookie game against the University of Alberta Golden Bears.
Moroz will be joined at Oilers camp by 18-year-old winger Brandon Baddock. Baddock is a free agent invitee to camp. The 6-foot-4, 206-pound forward had 11 points in 59 games for the Oil Kings last season, his first full year in the WHL, and also posted 73 penalty minutes. The Vermillion, AB native will be suiting up for the same team he grew up cheering for.
Overage defenceman Cody Corbett also got a free agent invite and will be attending camp with the Minnesota Wild. Corbett, a Minnesota native, will compete with the Wild at the Traverse City, Mich. Rookie Tournament. The 20-year-old blueliner had 42 points in 71 games last season.
Recent Oil Kings alumni David Musil (Edmonton), Martin Gernat (Edmonton), Travis Ewanyk (Edmonton), Laurent Brossoit (Calgary), Michael St. Croix (New York Rangers), Keegan Lowe (Carolina) and T.J. Foster (Washington) will also be attending NHL camps this fall.
