September 4, 2013, Burnaby, BC – Simon Fraser University men’s basketball head coach James Blake has announced that Frank Konig will re-join the Clan coaching staff for the 2013-14 season while Matt McKay will also come on board as an assistant coach.

“I am thrilled to have Coach Konig and Coach McKay on staff this year,” said coach Blake. “They are both quality basketball coaches and quality people who will have a tremendous impact on our team.”

Konig and McKay will assist Coach Blake and assistant coach Chris Cline in getting the Clan ready for the 2013-14 season, one which will start with pre-season contests against the Gonzaga Bulldogs and Montana Grizzlies.

Coach Konig’s day to day responsibilities will include team operations, game scouting and player development.

“Frank took last season off of coaching and we missed his competitive, hardworking attitude so we are pleased to have him back. He has great connections in the high school and college scene in Canada and will help us with local recruiting in British Columbia and across Canada,” said Blake.

He last coached with the Clan during the 2011-12 season.

Konig served as the second assistant coach at the University of the Fraser Valley from 2002-05. In that time, he helped guide UFV to the national championships every year, including a national championship win in 2004. He also served as head coach of Next Level Athletics, a non-profit youth basketball association from 2003-05.

As a player, Konig has experience at the Division II level, having played for a year at Glenville State College.

“I’m excited to return to SFU,” said Konig. “It’s exciting to get the opportunity to work with such a quality staff and I believe we have the right group of players here to be successful.”

Coach McKay’s major focus will be on player development, assisting in day to day operations with practice and game preparation.

“Matt is a very respected coach that has worked at the high school and collegiate level. He has great recruiting connections in the province and he will help SFU land some top notch talent out of BC,” continued Blake.

McKay has coached at both the collegiate and high school level, having served as the head coach of the Kwantlen College women’s basketball team in 2010-11 and as an assistant coach from 2006-08.

“I’m excited to join Coach Blake’s staff and work under him at Simon Fraser,” said McKay. “Despite looking forward to a successful high school season, the opportunity to coach NCAA basketball, in Canada, and in a conference as strong as the GNAC was too good to pass up.”

He has held several head coaching jobs at the high school level, most recently with Delta Secondary last season.

“This is a great opportunity for me to work under a fantastic head coach and with a great coaching staff, which I know will help me both grow professionally as well as provide me with a competitive challenge unparalleled in British Columbia,” continued McKay.

McKay has also held various coaching positions with Basketball British Columbia.

His addition to the Clan men’s basketball coaching staff builds on his family ties to SFU, as McKay’s father played football for the Clan in the 1970’s.

The 2013-14 SFU basketball season will kick off with training camp in October.
