September 7, 2013, Edmonton, AB – The University of Alberta Pandas’ women’s soccer team got all the offence they needed early in the first half as they raced their way to a season opening 3-0 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Saturday afternoon on the Foote Field turf in Edmonton.
The Pandas got goals in the 13th and 31st minutes of the first half, and their final goal in the 58th minute. Fifth-year defender Shalla Kadima scored once and added an assist, while new Panda Laura Kautz also scored as did third-year striker Jesse Candlish.
Kelti Biggs, Alberta’s fourth-year ‘keeper, made two stops for the win and shutout, while Lethbridge’s goalies Myriah Marino and Taylor Thomas combined to make nine stops. Marino, a rookie from Coaldale, Alta, allowed three goals in 68 minutes of action, while Thomas made four stops to close out the match.
Alberta got the game winning goal in the 13th minute when Kautz, a transfer from NAIT, sent a high cross into the Pronghorn crease that bounced over Marino.
Candlish doubled Alberta’s fortunes when she headed in a cross from Julia Ignacio in the 31st minute.
The final tally occurred in the 58th minute when Kadima rifled a free-kick from 30-yards out into the top left corner.
With the win Alberta opens the 2013-14 season with a 1-0 record, while Lethbridge falls to 0-1. The Pandas take on the Calgary Dinos on Sunday, September 8 at 2:00 pm at Foote Field, while Lethbridge travels to Calgary to take on the Mount Royal Cougars.
