September 9, 2013, EDMONTON – The Canada West conference has issued a one-game suspension to University of Saskatchewan Huskies football player Lane Bryska, to be served on Saturday September 14th when Saskatchewan plays at Calgary.

The Canada West Football Complaint Review Committee issued the suspension following review of a play from the Regina at Saskatchewan game on Friday, August 30th. Bryska, in his fifth year of CIS eligibility, delivered a late hit below the waist of Regina defensive lineman Calvin Smith. While Bryska was not penalized by game officials on the play, the committee deemed the hit illegal and somewhat careless.

“While there may be questions as to the timing of this announcement, it is nonetheless the right decision,” said Diane St-Denis, Executive Director with Canada West. “Our conference implemented a new video exchange system this year. A few transition issues with the new system prevented our convenor from reviewing the film in a timely manner. As we were dealing with a potential student-athlete suspension, we wanted to ensure we had reviewed all available information prior to rendering a final decision.”
