Panthers to Visit Cougars Thursday in VIJHL Match-Up

By Peter Kung

September 11, 2013, Victoria, BC – The Victoria Cougars (2-0-0) host the Peninsula Panthers (1-0-0) in a battle of two unbeaten teams this Thursday.

Game time at the Archie Browning Sports Centre, located at 1151 Esquimalt Road, is 7:00 p.m.

While the regular season is just a little over a week old, both clubs have been impressive thus far.

Victoria enters Thursday’s game with the Panthers coming off a convincing 10-0 defeat of the Westshore Wolves last Sunday.

Blake Roney scored three times while Mark Walton, Wade Johnson, Liam Carradine, Ryan Carson, David Marshall, Jo Davie, and Michael Fretz each added singles.

Getting the start in net was Connor Beauchamp who stopped all 18 shots he faced.

Victoria led 2-0 after one period and 6-0 after two.

In their two wins, the Cougars have outscored their opposition 16-3.

Not bad for a team made up of mostly new players.

Weakened by graduation and players moving onto Junior A or post-secondary school, the Cougars have as many as 14 newcomers on its roster.

Meanwhile, Peninsula is coming off a 6-1 win over the Kerry Park Islanders last Friday.

The Panthers got their goals from six different players – Brandon Story, Cole Glover, Zack Smith, Connor Logan, Tate Coughlin, and Jackson Skerratt.

Stephen Heslop made 32 saves for the win.

Unlike the Cougars, Peninsula has 14 returning players from last year.

Panthers’ GM Pete Zubersky was behind the bench for both Peninsula games, as Head Coach Brian Passmore is away on his honeymoon.
