September 11, 2013, VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes men’s soccer team are on the road this weekend, Sept. 13-14, for their first cross-divisional match up against the Winnipeg Wesmen and Mount Royal Cougars.

The Vikes are current 1-1-0 and in a four-way tie for top spot in the Pacific Division, while the Wesmen are on the hunt for their first win (0-2-1) and the Cougars are in third in the Prairie Division (1-0-1).
Last weekend the Vikes suffered a tough 4-1 loss to the then No. 1 UBC Thunderbirds in their home opener Sept. 6. Craig Gorman was the lone Vike to tally after his late, left-footed corner kick bended into the net to wipe the shut out off the board.
On Sunday, the Vikes bounced back to blank the Trinity Western Spartans 4-0 in an exciting, fast-paced game that saw Cam Hundal net two and Kurt Macaulay and Cam Stokes each capitalize for the first time this year. Canada West rivalry continued throughout the weekend as the Fraser Valley Cascades, who lost 2-1 to the Spartans Friday, upset the UBC Thunderbirds 1-0 on Sunday. The opening weekend has neutralized top spots in the Pacific Division, making this weekends match ups even more important.
For his weekend efforts, third-year Hundal was honoured as the Canada West 2nd Star of the Week and will be the major spark to the midfield attack this weekend. In addition, senior keeper Elliot Mitrou recorded the Sunday shut out and will be expected to continue improving his record in week two of Canada West action.
Last Weekend, Sept. 6-8, the Cougars and Wesmen went head-to-head in a double header that resulted in a 1-1 tie and a 1-0 Cougar win. In addition the Wesmen have suffered a loss to Saskatchewan, while the Cougars have yet to play their third match of the season. Neither team have cracked the CIS top-10 polls yet, with only No. 4 UBC, No. 6 Alberta and newly-ranked No. 10 Saskatchewan garnering that honour.
The Vikes will face the Wesmen on Sept. 13 at 4 p.m. and the Cougars on Sept. 14 at 1:30 pm. All times are in PT. Live stats and video will be available at
