September 12, 2013, Burnaby, B.C.- The Simon Fraser University Men’s Hockey Team kicks off the 2013/14 campaign with a busy pre-season schedule that will see them travel across North America for a series of six games.
The team will make a trip to Calgary on September 20th to play against SAIT and Red Deer College (ACAC), then head home for back-to-back match-ups against UBC (CIS), before flying to Boston to compete against Sacred Heart University and College of the Holy Cross (NCAA).
SFU will also sport a fresh look when it hits the ice for its first exhibition home game on September 13th against Trinity Western University with a new logo honoring Simon Fraser’s Scottish Clan heritage.
After making a BCIHL record sixth straight appearance in the finals last season, SFU lost in overtime to Selkirk College in the championship game. The loss sparked a busy offseason for the coaching staff, adding 14 new recruits combining for over 1,600 games of Junior A experience.
Notable recruits included BCHL standout Jared Eng who represented Team Canada in this year’s IIHF World Inline Hockey Championships, as well as former Prince George Spruce Kings captain Trevor Esau. The recruits will be counted on to fill a void left by graduating seniors Chris Hoe, Ben Van Lare, Evan Kurylo, Tadz Brown, and Joey Pavone.
The team opens the regular season at home against Thompson Rivers University on October 12th, before an opportunity for redemption against the Selkirk College Saints, in Burnaby, on October 26th. Both squads contributed to the strong overall growth of the BCIHL this offseason, with teams continuing to upgrade and add talent to their rosters.
SFU will also compete in the second annual Great Northwest Showcase on January 3rd and 4th, 2014, in Burnaby. The other participating teams will be announced later this fall.
