Vancouver Island Baseball Institute (VIBI) is a college baseball program in Nanaimo, BC and is a member of the Canadian College Baseball Conference (CCBC). The CCBC is comprised of: Thompson Rivers University (Kamloops, BC), Okanagan College (Kelowna, BC), Prairie Baseball Academy (Lethbridge, AB), University of Calgary (Calgary, AB), and VIBI. Players in the VIBI program attend Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo.
VIBI has achieved great success on the field under the guidance of Head Coach Jordan Blundell (Edmonton, AB). In his eight seasons at VIBI entering 2014, Blundell has seen VIBI appear in the CCBC Championship Game four times, winning the 2010 CCBC National Championship.
The program was founded in 1999 as the ‘Island Baseball Institute’ and functioned as the IBI for two seasons from 1999 to 2001. Beginning in the 2001-2002 season, the program adopted the name and logos of Malaspina College, operating as the Malaspina Mariners.
The program was rebranded in 2009 to reflect its current identity as Vancouver Island Baseball Institute. The VIBI name recognizes all of Vancouver Island, which is fitting, because of all of the involvement that the program has with youth players in our community. VIBI has been running youth camps and clinics for every age group since 2009, and continues to provide instruction to various youth players in Nanaimo as well as participating in Nanaimo Minor Baseball Association (NMBA) camps.
More than 50 VIBI players have received scholarship opportunities in the United States in Coach Blundell’s eight seasons. Adam Paulencu (Sherwood Park, AB) pitched for VIBI from 2009 to 2011, was selected in the 13th round of the 2011 MLB Draft by the San Francisco Giants and is currently playing in the Colorado Rockies organization.
