Miles notches goal and assist for No.7 Vikings
September 13, 2013, BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Forward Catherine Miles (So., Anacortes) scored a goal and assisted on another as Western Washington University won its home opener 2-0 over Notre Dame de Namur University on Thursday in women’s soccer action at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.
The Vikings, ranked No.7 nationally in this week’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America/NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll, improved to 2-0-0 with the triumph. WWU is unbeaten in its last four home openers
NDNU fell to 2-2-0.
Miles opened the scoring just 26 seconds into the game. Stephanie Hamilton (Orting/Bellarmine Prep) played a ball down the right side to Elise Aylward (Fr., Renton/Lindbergh), and Miles finished Aylward’s low cross.
After controlling the contest for long stretches, the Vikings got an insurance goal in the 66th minute. A through ball by Ashton Griffen (Sr., Duvall/Cedarcrest) found Miles down the left side. Miles then crossed into the goalmouth, and Kristin Maris (Issaquah) finished to the far post with a flick off the outside of her right foot.
“It was good to get a victory a home,” said WWU coach Travis Connell (11th year, 123-59-19). “Getting that early goal got us off to a fast start, which is something we talked about in pre-game.”
The Vikings had an 18-4 advantage in shot attempts, including a 10-1 edge in the first 30 minutes.
“When our attacking players are moving and active like they were in the first half, we’re hard to defend and we’ll get a lot of chances,” Connell said.
WWU goalkeeper Alyssa Beauchamp (Sr., Vancouver/Mountain View) made just one save in earning her second straight shutout.
The Vikings host Dixie State on Saturday, Sept. 14 (4 p.m.) at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.
