September 14, 2013, Everett, WA (ISN) – The Everett Silvertips defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 5-4 Friday night at Comcast Arena in Everett in a preseason game.
These two teams will meet Saturday night at ShoWare Center in the last preseason game of the season for both teams. Game time is 7:05pm.
The Silvertips took a 1-0 lead at 9:17 of the first period with a power-play goal by Brayden Low. Manraj Hayer and Matt Pufahl had the assists.
Seattle (4-2-0-0) tied the game 1-1 late in the first period. Justin Hickman drove the puck down the left wing into to the Everett zone. At the goal line he centered the puck to Mathew Barzal on top of the crease. Barzal beat Everett goalie Austin Lotz in close at 17:24 of the period for his fourth goal of the preseason.
The T-Birds took a 2-1 lead with just over a minute left in the game. Branden Troock chased down a Seattle dump in behind the Everett net. Troock tapped the puck to Connor Honey who brought the puck out from behind the Everett net on the left side. Honey centered to Delnov in the left circle. Delnov attempted to pass the puck across the slot to a wide open Troock, but an Everett defenseman blocked the pass. The puck came right back to Delnov and he had an open net to shoot at as Lotz was moving across the crease on the pass attempt. Delnov buried the puck to get his fourth goal of the preseason.
Everett (6-0-0-0) outshot Seattle 14-9 in the first period.
The Silvertips tied the game 2-2 with a shorthanded goal at 9:13 by Micheal Zipp. Low and Pufahl had the assists.
Everett scored three goals in 3:37 to take a 5-2 lead into the second intermission. Zipp scored at 13:07. Tyler Sandhu got the fourth Everett goal at 15:29 and Ivan Nikolishin scored at 16:44.
Everett outshot Seattle 21-5 in the second period and led 32-14 in shots after two periods.
The T-Birds cut the Everett lead to two goals at 6:43 of the third. Barzal grabbed a loose puck out of the air in the neutral zone, dropped it to his stick and skated up the right wing into the Everett zone. Barzal centered the puck to Lipsbergs in the slot and he beat Lotz over the glove with a hard snap shot.
Seattle pulled goalie Danny Mumaugh with over two minutes left in the game and it paid off at 18:35 of the period. Troock got the puck behind the Everett net and backhanded it into the slot right to Connor Honey. Honey beat Lotz low for the goal.
The T-Birds pulled Mumaugh again and Honey had two good scoring chances with under a minute left but Lotz made the saves.
Everett outshot Seattle 13-11 in the third period and 45-25 in the game.
Mumaugh made 4-0 saves on 45 shots and his preseason record is 1-1-0-0.
Lotz stopped 21 of 25 shots and his preseason record is now 3-0-0-0.
The T-Birds will drop the puck for the 2013-14 regular season against the Portland Winterhawks at ShoWare Center on Saturday, September 21 at 7:05pm.
