September 15, 2013, Langford BC (ISN) – The heavy hitters invaded Western Speedway Saturday night as the Lordco Auto Parts Demo Cars, Demo Trucks, Figure 8s, and the Bombers were competing for Championship points with only one event left in the 2013 race season.
Also, on the Speedway this night, was the Steve Copp Construction sponsored Hornet Series racing on the big oval. The program consisted of Trophy Dashes, Heat races, and Feature event for all classes. Trophy Dash wins went to Cory Meeres in the Hornet Series, Sam Lagan in the Figure 8s, Mike Melin in the Demo Cars, George Haywood in the Demo Trucks, and Danny Madden in the Bomber Series. Heat race victories went to Ryan Turko and Tristan Gait in the Hornets, Brandon Young and Kail Beck in the Figure 8s, Joe Liberatore in the Demo Cars, George Haywood with the Demo Trucks, and Rich Gerhardt and Tyler Clough in the Bomber Series. Joe Liberatore and Bill Munro had their heads shaved to raise funds for the Cops For Cancer Tour De Rock and then presented a cheque for over $9,500.00 to this worthwhile cause. Nine cars took the green flag for the Figure 8 Feature event led by Ashton Campbell and Sam Lagan. Doug Richens jumped into the lead early followed by Rhett Szevics and James Young. By lap six Kail Beck moved into the second position while Brandon Young followed in third. By lap twelve Shawn Young took the second spot with Rhett Szevics behind him. This race saw a change of positions on almost every lap except for Richens who still hung on to the lead. On lap nineteen, Brandon Young grabbed the lead followed by Beck and Szevics and that’s the order they took the chequered flag in a hard hitting Feature event.

Fourteen Hornets took the green flag for twenty laps of racing in their Feature event of the night led by Ron Gehring and Evan Moore. On lap four the yellow came out as Ashley Creed came to a stop on the front stretch but quickly refired her car while Tristan Gait, Daryn Cahill, and Sam Lagan held the top three positions for the resumption of green flag racing. By lap seven, Lagan took over the second position dropping Cahill back to third. These three drivers battled hard through the middle portion of the event until the yellow came out for debris on lap sixteen. Going down the backstretch on lap seventeen, Lagan passed Gait for the lead and would go on to the victory. Gait, Cahill, Brad Aumen, and Cory Meeres rounded out the top five positions.

Rich Gerhardt and Stuart Campbell shared the front row for thirty laps of racing in the Bomber Feature event with seventeen cars in the field. On the first lap several cars got together racing three wide and it collected Megan McCollum sending her headlong into the turn two wall and then sending Morgan Giles into her as well. She took a hard hit but was able to get out of her car on her own and was checked by the medical team. On the restart, Gerhardt jumped to the early lead followed by Jarrod Heap and Aaron Campbell. On lap fourteen Campbell took the second spot while Brian Wakelin moved into third. By lap seventeen, Wakelin grabbed the lead going down the backstretch followed by Gerhardt and Bobby Cyr. By lap twenty Cyr took over the second spot and he and Wakelin opened a good lead on the rest of the bunch. Over the remaining ten laps, Cyr dogged Wakelin and coming out of the last corner won the drag race to the chequered flag with Wakelin, Gerhardt, Aaron Cameron, and Mike Rutty rounding out the top five positions. Cyr said: “The last lap pass for the win and a drag race to the chequered is a pretty crazy feeling !”
