Laval’s Chastenay-Joseph, McGill’s Di Ioia honoured

September 18, 2013, Ottawa (CIS) – Soccer players Léa Chastenay-Joseph from Laval University and Massimo Di Ioia from McGill University are the Canadian Interuniversity Sport female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Sept. 15, 2013.

Chastenay-Joseph, a second-year actuarial student from Donnacona, Que., exploded for six goals in two games last weekend as the Rouge et Or improved to 4-0 on the season and made their way into the national Top 10, in seventh place. The talented striker opened the weekend on Friday night with a pair of markers, including the game-winner, in a 5-4 victory over No. 8-ranked Sherbrooke. She once again led the way on Sunday with a spectacular four-goal, one-assist performance in a 10-3 rout of Bishop’s.

Soccer players Kristy McGregor-Bales of Dalhousie, Krista Draycott of Ottawa and Julia Ignacio of Alberta were also nominated for the women’s award.

Di Ioia, a first-year physical education major from Blainville, Que., scored all four of his team’s goals on Sunday as the Redmen (1-2-1) came from behind to record their first win of the young campaign, a 4-2 success over cross-town rival Concordia. The 5-foot-7 forward, who previously played two seasons for the Montreal Impact, also helped McGill to a 1-1 draw against defending RSEQ champion UQTR last Friday.

John Kuto, a cross-country runner from Saint Mary’s, as well as soccer players Andrew Latty of Carleton and Reynold Stewart of UBC were the other male nominees.
