Canada advances to quarterfinals at NORCECA Championships

September 18, 2013, Omaha, Nebraska (ISN) – Canada lost in five sets 19-25, 28-26, 25-23, 13-25, 15-8, to Puerto Rico on Wednesday at the NORCECA (North and Central America and Caribbean) championships in women’s volleyball.

Canada concludes the round robin with a 1-1 record for second spot in Group C and advances to the quarterfinals. Puerto Rico (2-0) takes top spot.

Jaimie Thibeault of Sylvan Lake, Alta., led Canada with 13 kills and five blocks for 18 points. Tabitha Love of Dauphin, Man., added 16 points and Lisa Barclay of Brandon, Man., 15.

The winner of the tournament automatically qualifies to the 2013 FIVB Grand Champions Cup in Japan, Nov. 12 to 17. The U.S. team won the event in 2011 in Puerto Rico, and they are currently ranked #2 in the world – the top ranked team at this event.

The U.S. swept Cuba to take Group B while the Dominican Republic and Trinidad and Tobago were 1-2 in Group A.
