September 19, 2013, Omaha, Nebraska (ISN) – Tabitha Love of Dauphin, Man., produced 11 points Thursday to lead Canada to a 27-25, 25-11, 25-22 victory over Trinidad and Tobago in quarterfinal action at the NORCECA (North and Central America and Caribbean) women’s volleyball championships.
Ten different players earned at least a point for Canada.
“We had some ups and downs,” said Canada’s head coach Arnd Ludwig. “I’m proud that we won and its the first time in awhile that Canada has reached the semis at a big tournament.”
Canadian team captain Brittney Page of Vernon, B.C., said the players were anxious at times. Trinidad and Tobago actually held a 33-24 advantage in kills but committed a whopping 39 offensive errors.
“Trinidad and Tobago are somewhat unpredictable and that kept us on our toes,” said Page. “I think what got us in trouble is that we wanted to win so bad we were focusing on the last point and not the process.”
Canada faces defending champion and world number-two the United States in one of the semifinals on Friday. The winner of Puerto Rico-Mexico quarterfinal held later Thursday faces the Dominican Republic in the other semi.
“Playing the U.S., is going to be a learning experience for us,” said Ludwig. “We need to play every game we can get. It’s going to fun. We have no pressure whatsoever.”
The winner of the tournament automatically qualifies to the 2013 FIVB Grand Champions Cup in Japan, Nov. 12 to 17. The U.S. team won the event in 2011 in Puerto Rico.
