September 21, 2013, Edmonton, AB (ISN) – One game in, green seems to suit the Edmonton Oil Kings.
The Oil Kings (1-0-0-0) debuted new green and black jerseys and an alternate logo Friday night in their 2013-14 Home Opener against the Calgary Hitmen (0-1-0-0) and looked right at home in their digs en route to a 7-3 victory.
Edmonton’s power play, which struggled through the preseason, exploded for 4 goals, finishing 4/8 on the night, powering their offence.
Aaron Irving got the scoring parade going early for Edmonton, striking with a point shot just as a power play was ending just 4:20 into the game. It was Irving’s first career WHL goal.
Calgary’s Jake Virtanen responded with a power-play goal of his own, but from then on it was all Oil Kings as Edmonton scored five straight goal, building a lead they wouldn’t give up.
Cody Corbett finished with two goals and an assist for the Oil Kings, while fellow blueliner Ashton Sautner had a goal and two assists to lead all scorers. Mitch Moroz, Brett Pollock and Henrik Samuelsson also scored for Edmonton. Mads Eller picked up his first WHL point with an assist.
Greg Chase scored a pair of third-period goals for the Hitmen.
Tristan Jarry picked up the win for Edmonton, his fourth straight regular season win dating back to 2012-13. The 18-year-old netminder made 27 saves in goal for the Oil Kings.
Calgary goalie Chris Driedger gave up six goals on 26 shots before being replaced midway through the second period. Back-up Mack Shields stopped 11 of the 12 shots he faced.
The Oil Kings are back in action Wednesday, Sept. 25 when they host the Regina Pats.
