September 22, 2013 (ISN) – Hello Island Sports News – anthem singer and recording artist, Michelle Szulc, here!
I am once again excited to update you on some of my sport-anthem adventures since my last article update back in June.
As I previously mentioned, on June 21st, I flew over with the visiting Coquitlam Adanacs to come and sing for the Victoria Shamrocks! I must say, flying to Victoria was much faster than taking the ferry. I was also provided with another opportunity to sing for the Victoria Shamrocks on August 9th during the playoffs. For this trip, the Burnaby Lakers were very gracious and provided me with my accommodations.
I had a great time singing for the teams on these two occasions, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Victoria Shamrocks for inviting me over to sing!
After I finished singing the anthem on August 9th, the Victoria fans applauded my singing once again as I came up the stairs. I have never had this happen before, and it definitely made me feel good about my performance! – Photo courtesy of Kasey Eriksen (ISN) August 9th
On August 23rd, I was asked to sing for the Minto Cup – a national Junior A lacrosse tournament. I had actually been asked to sing for several of these games, but with the busy schedule I lead, I was only able to make it to one of the games.
I had never sung for this event before, I was so excited to be taking part! The next day, on August 24th, I had the pleasure to sing for the Vancouver Canadians. I was originally scheduled to sing on July 18th, as well; however, due to some health complications, I had to withdraw from the event. I am very happy that I had another date with the team. The Canadians were named the Northwest League Champions for the third consecutive year in a row – congratulations to the team!

The following week, I was back in Victoria (sponsored by PTW Repairs and Spoons Diner) to sing for the events at Western Speedway on August 30th and 31st . I was singing for the Peninsula Co-Op/Coca-Cola Reg Midgley event – one of the oldest races in Canada!
Not only did I lead O’Canada on these two nights, I also had the opportunity to be one of the trophy girls. This required me to congratulate the winners of the races and pose for several photographs. After the races, I then took part in a number of interviews that were being filmed by Western Speedway. I either had to hold the trophies, or was actually interviewed about my singing adventures!
My photos will be on display in the Western Speedway Hall of Fame, established in 1948 – what an honour! I would especially like to thank one of the staff members from Western Speedway (Ken Keating) for all his hard work to bring me over to the island to sing.
I originally met Ken back in December when I came to Victoria to sing for the Royals, Ken was determined to have me sing at a Western Speedway event during the summer.

I am now preparing for the up coming hockey season, and I am hoping to be back singing for many of the teams I have sung for in the past.
I actually had a very exciting start to my hockey season, singing for the Vancouver Canucks pre-season game against the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday, September 18th! I was very honoured, excited, and nervous to be singing for the team again. After I was off the ice, many of my friends had sent me text messages and pictures… and the pictures were of me on their television screens – I could not believe I had made Sportsnet!
A big thank-you to Sportsnet for showing the anthem on television that evening. I had great feedback and support from many people about my rendition of O’Canada at the game. I was requested to sing for the BCHL Langley Rivermen home opener against the Coquitlam Express on September 20th. It was definitely a fun and loud crowd, and I look forward to singing for the Rivermen and Express over the 2013/14 season!
