September 21, 2013, Saskatoon, SK (ISN) – Centre back Jordian Farahani gave his University of Saskatchewan Huskies a 1-0 win over the visiting University of Calgary Dinos with a goal on a free kick in the 73rd minute Saturday on Field 7 in PotashCorp Park in Saskatoon.
After striker Brett Levis won the free kick when he was tripped by a Dinos defender in the 73rd minute, Farahani took the 18-yard kick, sailing the ball into the top right corner to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. It was the first goal of the season for the former Canada West All-Star.
With the win, Saskatchewan improves to 4-1-0, keeping pace with the top of the Canada West Prairie Division standings. Calgary falls to 2-3-0 with the loss.
In a scoreless first half, Saskatchewan had the best opportunities with two balls sailing just wide by Garrett Peters and one tipped over the net by Luigi Bekwayo.
Calgary had a big chance to open the scoring just minutes into the second half when a scramble in front of the net resulted in the ball trickling just wide of Huskies’ keeper Michal Bandula. Saskatchewan also found an opportunity in the 67th minute when a Levis shot was blocked. The Huskies kept the ball but keeper Jordan Unreiner was able to scoop the ball before Saskatchewan could find the back of the net.
Despite giving up the goal, Unreiner was strong in net for the Dinos making eight saves. Saskatchewan outshot the Dinos 15-5 in the match. Bandula made one save at the other end of the field for the Huskies.
The two teams will battle again Sunday. Match time is 2:15 p.m. on Field 7 in PotashCorp Park.
