Mount Douglas Rams Football – Update

Mark Townsend – Mount Doug Rams

September 22, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – The Mount Douglas Varsity Rams built up an early 28 to 0 first quarter lead en route to a convincing 51 to 0 victory over New West in the opening game of conference play. We talked about getting off to a great start and playing our very best early, and the Rams did that exactly as evidenced by our the quarter.

Mack Wegenast got the ball rolling for the Rams on the opening kickoff as he recovered a New West fumble. The next play Julian Luis was in the end zone on a 14 yard TD run. On the next ofensive series for the Rams Julian Luis again found the end zone this time on a 8 yard TD scamper. Marcus Davis accounted for the next 2 majors, first on a 59 yard punt return to end zone and then on a 29 yard TD strike from Ashton MacKinnon. Seye Farinu had a major of his own on a 5 yard run, Alexis Keppenne caught a 2 yard TD pass from MacKinnon and Sean Waugh finished the scoring with a 50 yard Punt Return for a touchdown of his own. Callum kicked a Field Goal and hit 6 convert kicks. Marcus Davis had 198 all purpose yards (57 rush, 53 receiving & 88 punt returns). Julian Luis finished with 59 rushing on 8 carries. Ashton MacKinnon was strong hitting 6 of 10 for 107 yards in passing and 2 TD tosses. Ross Faulkner had 2 receptions for 33 yards and Alexis Keppenne had 2 catches for 21 yards to go along with his TD.

On the defensive side of the ball, the stingy Rams defense was lead by 6 tackle performances of Julian Luis and Seye Farinu. Pato Vega chipped in with 5 tackles. The defensive line play was stellar with James Nicholas recording 4 tackles plus 2 sacks, Christian Krause with 3 tackles plus 1 sack (in half a game) and Zack Wilkinson with 2 tackles plus 1 sack. Other strong performances were turned in by Peter Elwood with 4 tackles, Ryan Yeske with 4 and James Jones with 3. Special Teams obviously played a key role in the game with the fumble recovery on the opening kickoff, 2 punt returns for TD’s and excellent kicking from Callum.

Great effort by all players but we still need to work hard and continue to improve every day.
