September 22, 2013 (ISN) – Western Speedway hosted the Steve Drane Harley Championship night for the SDL Bins I.M.S. 4 Mini Stocks, the Island Stock Cars, Richlock Rentals Non Wing Sprint Cars, OTRA, and the Keg Steakhouse & Bar Driver’s Challenge for the Late Model Series on Saturday night.
The race program included Heat races for all classes plus the Feature events. The Heat race victories went to Steven Dardengo and James Miller with OTRA, Dave Emmerson and Mark Stuart in the Sprint Car Class, Chris McInerny and Daryl Crocker in the Stock Car Series, Justin Woodske with the Mini Stocks, and Geoff Morris and Rory Smith in the Late Model Series.
Over the last several races there has been a fund raiser called the “Hannah For Disneyland” campaign spearheaded by George Wade. George encountered Hannah’s mom in a store parking lot with a broke down truck. He offered them a ride home and learned that Hannah suffers from a form of cancer and would like to go to Disneyland. George was so touched that he was determined to try and find help and brought the campaign to Western Speedway. As so many times in the past, fans, drivers, businesses, and teams responded. Kids packing quarters, fans handing over bills, race teams donating their winnings for the night, and businesses chipping in. Jason Tarasenko, a business owner and a former Late Model Champion, has responded by arranging tickets for the family to take Hannah to Disneyland. Hannah and her family received a loud ovation after being introduced on the front stretch along with George and Jason. Jason said: “How can you not help”. That’s the racing community.

Brad Purdy and Steve Copp shared the front row as fourteen cars lined up to take the green flag for the start of the first fifty lap Feature event in the Keg Steakhouse & Bar Driver’s Challenge. Purdy led the first lap but was passed by Rory Smith going down the back stretch on lap two followed quickly by Brent Morris. On lap three, the yellow came out as Bart Smith spun around on the front stretch. On the double file restart, Smith had Morris on the front row for the resumption of green flag racing. Smith got the best jump and went back to the lead followed by Morris and Brandon Carlson. By lap sixteen Smith had a decent lead while Morris and Carlson hung on to second and third with Geoff Morris and Darrell Midgley moving into fourth and fifth respectively. By lap twenty, Jason Tarasenko moved into the fifth position and then moved to the fourth position on lap thirty-two and one lap later took the third position. At the chequered flag, Smith took the win followed by Brent Morris, Tarasenko, Geoff Morris, and Darrell Midgley rounding out the top five positions.

Alex Mouner took the lead on the first lap followed by Waksel and Justin Woodske until Woodske took the second position before the lap was complete. On lap two, Woodske passed Mouner for the lead dropping Mouner back to second as Sean Constantine moved up to third. Constantine encountered motor problems earlier and had to change engines just to get into the Feature event and by lap five was running in second. When the chequered flag dropped Woodske had the win followed by Constantine, Mouner, Caleb Van Bree, and Matt Szauer. With the win Woodske secured the Championship for 2013 by one point and won his first Feature event of the season.

Steven Dardengo and Larry Joyce shared the front row for the twenty lap Feature event for the OTRA Series. Joyce got the early lead followed by Dardengo and Denis Morneau. On lap four the yellow came out as Tom Cinnamon spun around and was tapped by James Miller. Both vehicles would continue. On the restart, Morneau quickly moved up to run in the second position and George Jenson running third. By lap six, Miller moved up to claim the third position behind Morneau and Joyce. On lap eight the red flag came out as Steven Dardengo ran up a tire and went over sending the roof of the car sliding for several feet along the turn three wall. It only took a few seconds for him to exit a badly torn up race car with no injuries much to the delight of everyone. Once under green again, James Miller got the lead and was chased hard by Duane Zeinstra but hung on for the win followed by Jenson, Morneau, Roger and Kail Beck rounding out the top five positions. Miller also won the OTRA Championship Trophy that goes with the final OTRA Feature winner.

This line continued for several laps but behind them Rory Smith and Darrell Midgley were moving into the top five positions. By lap thirty-seven, Tarasenko and Morris were running side by side for the lead for a couple of laps and on lap forty-three Tarasenko made the complete pass and took over the lead.
