September 24, 2013, Langley, BC (ISN) – Canada’s National Volleyball team got off to a strong start at the 2013 NORCECA Men’s Continental Championship on Monday night (September 23rd). In Canada’s first game of the tournament they defeated Guatemala in dominating fashion, 3-0 (25-10, 25-10, 25-10).

It was a block party for Canada in game one as they had 22 blocks to Guatemala’s zero. Some early big blocks got the Canadian crowd into the game as the atmosphere at the Langley Events Centre was in fine form to kick start the tournament. Rudy Verhoeff was a beast at the net for Canada with a game high 8 blocks, as the Trinity Western alumni looked right at home in his first game back at the LEC since claiming gold in the 2011 CIS National Championships.

Canada put together a balanced attack making it difficult for Guatemala to stay with them offensively. Gavin Schmitt led the way with 7 kills followed closely by Gord Perrin, Fred Winters and Dallas Soonias who all had 6 kills apiece. Guatemala’s Leonardo Blanco had a match high 10 kills for his team in a losing cause.

It was the start Canada wanted and they got contribution from everyone who stepped on the floor tonight. Canada will enjoy a rest day tomorrow as Guatemala takes on Mexico at 4pm. Canada’s back in action on Wednesday night against Mexico at 8pm and with a win Canada has a chance to secure a semi-final match.

Additional reserved seating has just been released for all days of the tournament.
