Familiar face to speak at Raise A Paw breakfast

September 24, 2013, Saskatoon, SK  (ISN) – The University of Saskatchewan Huskie Women’s Basketball Foundation is pleased to announce past President Peter MacKinnon will be this year’s guest speaker at the Raise a Paw Breakfast.

MacKinnon spent 13 years as the President of the University of Saskatchewan. During his tenure he was a familiar face at many basketball games at the PAC even travelling to nationals to show his support. “Peter MacKinnon’s support for the women’s basketball program meant a lot to the players,” says Jill Humbert, Huskies assistant coach. “He was always positive whenever he spoke with us and we appreciated he found the time in his busy schedule to come watch us play.”

The committee is also pleased to announce that current President Ilene Busch-Vishniac will be attending her first Raise a Paw breakfast to bring greetings on behalf of the University of Saskatchewan. Head coach Lisa Thomaidis returns to the helm after a one-year sabbatical which saw her named head coach of Canada’s national women’s basketball team.

Thomaidis will introduce this year’s squad and talk about the upcoming season. A conscious decision was made earlier this year to raise the profile of this annual event by coming up with a name and logo and to move to a weekday time to attract more business sponsorship.

Competition for the brightest and best women’s basketball players is increasing which means the need for sufficient scholarship funds to bring these student/athletes here is growing. Over the past decade, this program has become one of the most successful women’s programs in Saskatchewan thanks in part to scholarship money raised through events like the Raise a Paw Breakfast.

Look at the numbers academically and athletically for this team; since 1998, members of this program have been named to the all-Academic team 38 times and two Canada West titles in the past seven years. The team opens its exhibition schedule September 25 at the PAC against the Lakeland Rustlers.

Tip off is 6:30 p.m. Tickets are still available for the Raise a Paw breakfast and may be purchased online at huskiestickets.ca. Date: October 24, 2013 Time: 7:00 a.m. Location: TCU Place Tables of 8: $500 Adults: $60 Youth: $20
