Stokes, Kurianowicz take third stars for Canada West

September 24, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – The University of Victoria Vikes have two athletes as Canada West Stars of the Week for the week ending Sept. 22.

Men’s soccer midfielder Cameron Stokes and field hockey midfielder Amanda Kurianowicz were each honoured as 3rd stars in the men’s and women’s categories following last weekend’s performances.

Third Star: Cameron Stokes

Fourth-year midfielder Cameron Stokes continues to impress this season following another productive weekend on the pitch. Stokes’ two-goal performance in the UVic Vikes 4-0 victory over Trinity Western University, Friday, Sept. 20 tie him with teammate Cam Hundal for the team lead in goals.

Friday’s match saw Stokes finish a Craig Gorman free kick to net his first goal. Gorman, the team’s point leader fired the ball through a wall of players before it found Stokes six yards out. Stokes would make no mistake, swinging around and firing it to the back of the net to extend the Vikes lead to two in the game. His second goal of the game came after chasing the the ball down, beating his defender to the ball and firing a low, rolling ball that caught the TWU goalkeeper in an awkward position.


Stokes also ties Hundal for second on the team in points with five total (4G, 1A), following leader Craig Gorman who leads with six (1G, 5A).

Third Star: Amanda Kurianowicz

Second-year midfielder Amanda Kurianowicz provided the women’s field hockey squad with goals in both victories over the Calgary Dinos last weekend. The Vikes dominated the matches, winning 6-0 and 2-0 to begin their season undefeated along with UBC.

Kurianowicz’s first goal of the weekend came in Saturday’s 6-0 defeat 15 minutes into the match. Her second goal of the weekend came Sunday, as a result of a hard run along the right baseline at the 61-minute mark. The Alberta native pulled it to her backhand and fired a shot short side to put the Vikes up 2-0.

Kurianowicz’s goals place her in a tie for fourth in Canada West scoring alongside women’s field hockey captain Kyla Kirby.
